Summary of Mike Mower's Presentation

  • Provo and Utah have some of the highest birth rates in the nation
  • 70% of our growth is internal, the rest is in migration
  • Provo has demonstrated vision in the past with the library, performing art center, farmers market, office tower, airport, iProvo
  • Provo has a lot of people with a lot of kids
  • Our families tend to stay local; they like being around each other
  • The Provo population projection  in 50 years is 185,000
  • This population increase will challenge us to consider alternative development patterns - fit more people in smaller areas, density, vertical development, redevelopment
  • The size of the older population cohort will continue to grow, as older people are living longer
  • Utah County have a population of 1.5 million in 50 years, the State population will double
  • Population growth affects all areas - transportation, land use, water, education, etc.
